Is Your HVAC Unit Energy-Efficient? What to Do When It Runs Down

A properly designed HVAC system can be one of your best investments from an energy-efficiency standpoint. A properly sized unit will cost less to operate and provide a more even, comfortable temperature without costing you a fortune.

In some cases — particularly with older equipment — there may be problems that prevent your HVAC system from operating as efficiently as it should. Sometimes, the situation might be so bad that you must immediately call a 24 hour AC repair service provider. Here’s how to tell if the problem is with your unit or elsewhere in your home:

Your Unit Cycles Frequently

Cycling is a common sign that the equipment is oversized, overworked, or starting to fail. A suitably sized unit doesn’t run constantly but instead increases its capacity as needed and takes short breaks between heating and cooling cycles. If your system runs all day without stopping, it’s likely too large for your home.

Call a technician to check your ductwork to ensure there aren’t any holes or leaks that could allow conditioned air to escape, lessening the system’s effectiveness.

Your Home Feels Drafty

If your home doesn’t hold heat well, you’ll feel colder than normal because conditioned air is leaking out of your home. Air ducts may not be adequately sealed, doors and windows don’t fit tightly, or gaskets around windows or openings in the wall or floor fail.

If you suspect this might be the problem, check the attic for excessive insulation that could prevent ductwork from warming your living areas. Also, look at seams around windows and doors to ensure they fit tightly.

Your House Doesn’t Stay Cool During Summer

If your HVAC system is too small, it can’t handle the extreme temperatures it’s expected to control in the summertime. It can lead to an uncomfortable house filled with sweaty guests rather than a cool environment where you can relax.

If your house is hot all the time, your system may constantly be running in an attempt to compensate for being too small. You may need to call a 24 hour AC repair technician to determine if it can handle extreme temperatures while also reducing humidity.

You Find Dirt or Dust on Your Furniture

It’s normal for some dust around the house or on your furniture. However, if you have an overly dusty home or more dust on surfaces than usual, it could indicate that the system isn’t doing its job effectively.

Dust particles collecting around vents or near returns signify that your HVAC system is working too hard to move air through ducts and into living spaces. If you find this is the case, it is best to consult with a technician to recommend a few things you can do to help reduce dust and protect your unit.

Your Air Conditioner Runs Constantly Without Offsetting Cooling Costs

If you turn on your air conditioner and notice that it’s working excessively hard, it could be trying to compensate for too little airflow through the system.

If there’s a problem with the airflow, your HVAC unit may constantly be running and still not cooling your home adequately. Worse yet, it could strain itself to the point of breaking down completely. If your air conditioning is blowing, but it feels like it’s not doing anything and you’re still hot and sweaty, then it could be time to call a 24-hour AC repair technician to address the issue.

If your home is set at extreme temperatures, you’re uncomfortable, and your unit is constantly running, it may be time to invest in something that better suits the size of your home. You can consult with an expert on AC about the right unit that would suit your home requirements and make a decision accordingly.
