What Are Plantation Shutters?

Shot with DxO ONE

Andy Dwyer once said, “’cause windows are the eyes to the house.”

While some would think that’s creepy, windows indeed give homes character. That’s why it pays to know how to dress them.

The good news is, there are window treatment options for every room in your home. For example, you can use sheer panels for living spaces where privacy isn’t too much of a concern. In the bedroom, you can opt for the curtains plus blinds treatment.

Or, if you prefer something classic, you can go for plantation shutters. Now, if you’re not sure what these are and how they differ from other window treatments, read on.

Plantation Shutters: The Basics

Some people use the terms “plantation shutters” and “plantation blinds” interchangeably. However, it’s better to use “shutters” because, unlike blinds, they’re securely drilled into a window frame.

The four main parts of plantation shutters are louvers, tilt rod, divider rail, and stile. Louvers or slats are adjustable. They can be closed for privacy and sun protection as needed.

Meanwhile, the tilt rod opens and shuts the louvers while the divider rail separates the slats, allowing for better control of each part. Last would be the stile or those wood pieces that hold the mounted louvers.

Types of Plantation Shutters

There are different ways to categorize plantation shutters. Based on material, you can choose among wood, vinyl, and composite plantation shutters. The last one refers to engineered or faux wood.

You can also classify plantation shutters according to style. Here, you have tier-on-tier shutters, cafe-style shutters, and full-height shutters.

Another way to distinguish plantation shutters is through how they’re mounted. Inside mount plantation shutters are a good option for new windows, while outside mounted shutters are recommended for those with existing window trims.

Plantation Shutters vs. Other Window Treatment Options

The best window treatments are those that suit your budget and needs. What’s great about plantation shutters is while they cost more than traditional window coverings, they’re durable, easy to clean, and operate.

Plantation shutters are also a classic for a reason. They’re stylish year-round and can increase your home’s value. Besides coming in various styles and materials, they’re also childproof.

Installation is also a breeze. Some online stores make it easy even for novices to install their products if you want DIY shutters. Just remember that placement is crucial, so make sure to move your furniture to allow for the opening of the shutters.

Also, like other window treatments, plantation shutters work well with coverings like hanging panel curtains, drapes, etc., so don’t be afraid to experiment.

Ready to Go Window Shopping?

Now that you know more about plantation shutters, are you considering them for your home?

Before you decide, don’t forget to explore your other window treatment options. Remember that you don’t need to limit yourself to one kind of window covering or treatment.
